PDlogo   Chance's  Story

Chance is a very friendly 35 pound terrier mix that my husband and I rescued from the shelter when she was only 6 weeks old. We fell in love with her right away! She only weighed 3 pounds at the time and became very ill the second day that we had her home. She had contracted the parvovirus and was hospitalized for a few days. She seemed to be doing much better but relapsed as soon as we had her home and needed to be hospitalized again. She also had mange and kennel cough which was easily cared for. At 8 months of age she was diagnosed with diabetes. We were on vacation at the time and she was drinking and urinating excessively. She was also very lethargic. It was a scary time as she "crashed" with a hypoglycemic episode as soon as we started her on insulin therapy.

We visit the vet every 3 weeks and have a fructosamine and glucose drawn. She is poorly controlled although she receives 5 units of NPH insulin twice daily and 1-1/2 cups of diet dog food. She is very energetic and it is about impossible to control her activity. She was just starting to do really well and now she has "crashed" three times in the past 2 days. My vet has just cut her insulin dosage in half and hopefully this is the answer.

Some think that we are crazy because our lives basically revolve around this dog but we love her very much and she is like a child to us. I hope that she lives a very long and happy life. Chance is a fighter and I'm sure that she will bounce back again.
